The adenosine deaminase in the sample enzymatically degrades adenosine to produce inosine. Inosine converts to hypoxanthine, through the action of purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP), and hypoxanthine in xanthine oxidase (XOD) Oxidized to produce uric acid and hydrogen peroxide.
